    Interview for Heroes

Battlefield Heroes Q&A with Colin Clarke May 27

Will buildings and/or other obstacles be destructible?

There is no world destruction planned for Battlefield Heroes. This is in part to keep the system requirements down and also to make the game easier to learn and master. If we asked players to have to negotiate constantly changing terrain we wouldn’t be able to call it a casual game

Will you be able to refill ammo/HP out in the field (as in BF1942 and BFV)? If not, will a class be able to hand out ammo/HP?

Every class in Battlefield Heroes has unlimited ammo and is able to heal themselves on the fly. Though the Soldier class could be described as being the closest to a traditional Battlefield ‘medic’ if you choose to play him as such; you could just as easily leave this group heal ability out and focus just on offensive abilities

    Will all classes have grenades?

Only one class in Battlefield Heroes has grenades, though all the classes have access to some form of explosive. Either way there will be a Kaboom!

Will there be any stationary weapons?

Yes, currently we have anti-aircraft guns around some of the capture points in the map that has vehicles

Will there be any expansions or booster packs? If so, will they be free of charge?

This is a free game! So we want any expansions or booster packs we release to be available to everyone

How will you shoot down aircraft?

Every single weapon on the ground in Battlefield Heroes has the potential to shoot down an aircraft. Naturally the Anti-Air is the most effective tool for doing this, but with some practice you could use a sniper rifle and shoot the pilot out of their seat ;)

What similarities with Battlefield 1942 will we see in Battlefield Heroes?

We focused on those particular events that have been dubbed “Battlefield Moments” with Battlefield Heroes. So one could say that the main similarity is the potential for things to go horribly right in unexpected ways

Which is the biggest factor deciding who will win a one on one duel? Playtime? Rank? Skill?

Our focus in balancing the game was to have fights be determined most by how you use what you have and not so much how good what you have is. Of course there will still be loads of items that might give advantage at the right time, in the right place

Seems very simplified compared to other battlefields, which I think is a bad thing. Oh well its free you can't argue that.

It does seem a bit simple to me, simple even for a free game. We all know EA/DICE have screwed up in the past, lets hope they don't do it again. Certainly looking around at peoples comments it doesn't look to good. Mainly people are concerned about "glorifying."

"The "National Army?" Perhaps if they wanted to make a pay for free game that is accessible to the young, they should have choosen a time frame that didn't end with 72 million people dead."

This discussion goes on for a long time at a certain website.

As well as this, looking at their website, the comments seem strangely nice. Any one who uses youtube on a regular basis knows what that kind of content that gets as "feedback" and you would have thought there would have been some bad comments on the BF Heroes website - no.

On a lighter note; an EA login screen has been added to their homepage it seems like it's not working so I can't tell you what benefits logging in will give you, because everything except the homepage is down at the moment.

    Re: BETA clarification

It's a free game not intended for the hardcore shooter crowd.  If it isn't complete crap, I expect this to be pretty popular.  Not sure how many will actually pay for it though.

I give them credit for trying something different.  The FPS genre is pretty stale, we've been getting the same game over and over for a couple years now...  <Me = runs and hides from FPS TAW Members>

I just dont see what game really offers, shooters come in two ways: teambased like TF2, or BF2 and individual based ala Halo and CS. It seems that Heroes is going for both, where its still kit based but the kits don't really support each other? It seems like its trying to please both sides, but from what I see so far it might fail at both. The thing that really makes me mad, is that if DICE just concentrated on BF3 I would be happy, but no they have to experiment.Angry

I think revolutionay gameplay seems like what bad company is offering: destructible enviorments and making your own exit and entrance. Only if it was for PC we could have 64players instead of only 24[:'(]

To me it looks like it offers:

    1. A really fun and over the top game like tf2.
    2. A way for dice to get back into the WW2 theme without remaking bf1942.
    3. A free game
    4. ... and of course...  tanks.

    Teamplay? I think not...

I just want to make it clear that in my view DICE have no intention of making this team based, and I suspect playing as a clan will be effected by this, but we will only find out when the game is released.

I appreciate TF2 was over the top, having tried it myself, however, judging by the trailers this is something far out. It says in the trailer, and I quote, "not getting shot in the face repeatedly by a swearing, ultra skilled 15 year old boy who plays the game for 8 hours." Isn't it just ironic that the trailer is 100% childish. That line, and infact the whole movie, sounds like it was put together by a 15 year old, thats probably an understatement. I don't want to sound sad here, it does look fun, but I have this funny feeling many adults after playing for a few weeks will be bothered with it, and it will become over ridden by 12 year olds, like BF2 before it.

I can guarantee that over 50% of the people playing the game will be kids, just from seeing thei immaturity of the trailer.

I wouldn't put too much stock into the assumption that cartoony = attracting young teens.

TF2, as has been mentioned before, is extremely cartoony but typically attracts an older crowd than alot of FPSes because of the game dynamics. I wouldn't rush to judgement until more word comes out about the gameplay. It looks like it might be a great mesh between the style and realisticness of BF2 and the over the top simplicity that is TF2 and I am seriously looking forward to it.

I always seem to confuse peopleBig Smile

I did say at the start I found that TF2 was kinda childish in some ways bit it's GREAT fun! What I was referring to was the trailer. It's childish, more than childish. I meant that it's things like that the get people to play a game. Making it that stupid will give people completly the wrong impressions.

I just watched the trailer you are talking about to see what the deal is. I don't know if I got the same read from it that you did. Any word on whether this will be team based or FFA? If FFA only, count me out.

New character customization vid is out. Looks pretty sweet.

Its is teamplay in the BF2 sense. Anyone who knows what non-clan BF2 play is like can tell you. The only team orientated part is winning.
